Types of Dental Implants

Dental implants are often the best form of dental restoration for patients of all ages. Implants consist of a root, an attachment, and a crown. Dental implants have been in the market for a long time now and the major thing that has to be noted is the fact that they have been highly successful over the years.

When you get dentures or bridges, you just rely on your dentist to make things right. But do you get to get the freedom of choice when you get dental implants? You’d think that such a big dental procedure would indeed offer you some control. If you do get some freedom of choice while getting your implants, how do you get it? These are the questions that we will try and answer in this article.

Firstly, there are some types of dental implants that you can choose from and some that you can’t choose from. Confusing? We’ll clear that out in a while! Here are the types of dental implants:

Endosteal Implants and Subperiosteal Implants

Endosteal implants are the most common type of dental implants. It is a surgical procedure in which a post is implanted into the jawbone and a crown is fitted on top of it.

On the other hand, patients who have lost too much bone to support an implant have to undergo subperiosteal dental implants. These implants are a little more invasive. A metal framework is inserted below the gum line, over which, the implant is placed. This metal framework acts like a jawbone.

As you’d understand, you can’t choose if you need an endosteal implant or a subperiosteal implant. It completely depends on how much bone you’ve lost as a result of a missing tooth. However, there are other methods that you can opt for in case you have lost too much bone. The most common of them is bone grafting.

Titanium and Zirconia

Titanium is the most common material used in dental implants. They are strong and durable, which are known to last a lifetime!

Zirconia implants, on the other hand, are comparatively new in the market and are ceramic. They best resemble the natural teeth and the fact that they’re non-metallic makes them best suited for people who are allergic to metal.

In this case, you can choose if you wish to have titanium dental implants or zirconia dental implants. However, you must know that zirconia implants are more expensive than titanium implants.

All-on-4 or all-on-6 dental implants

This is a type of implant in which four or 6 implants can restore all the teeth in one jaw. This means that if you’re completely toothless, you can restore all your 32 teeth by just getting 8–12 implants.

Can you choose if you need this? Yes! Most of the time, it’s you who decides whether you need all-on-4 or all-on-6 implants.

Dental implants require absolute precision and you must get your implants from a dental clinic that specializes in dental implants. If you’re in South Airdrie, Alberta, Canada, you can get the most reliable and effective dental implants with just one call!
